CAROLE KING

The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize

The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song celebrates the work of an artist whose career reflects lifetime achievement in promoting song as a vehicle of musical expression and cultural understanding. The styles in which these works are composed reflect myriad contemporary traditions like rock, jazz, country, pop, blues, folk, and gospel. The recipient-whether composer, singer/songwriter, or interpreter-is recognized for entertaining and informing audiences, for drawing upon the acknowledged foundations of popular song, and for inspiring new generations of performers on their own professional journeys.

The selection is made by the Librarian of Congress in consultation with a board that is both credible and broad enough in scope to represent the full spectrum of popular song. Board members may include but need not be limited to scholars, producers, performers, music critics, songwriters, and subject specialists within and outside the Library of Congress.

THE MOTOWN SOUND

In Performance at The White House

THE  MOTOWN  SOUND

MOTOWN

As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, Berry Gordy’s legendary Motown made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a sound that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century. Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson & the Jackson 5, the Marvelettes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Lionel Richie & the Commodores, Teena Marie, their music communicated and brought together a racially divided country and segregated society, around the world, touching all people of all ages and races.

No other record company in history has exerted such an enormous influence on both the style and substance of popular music and culture. With more than 180 No. 1 hit songs worldwide and counting, that influence is still being felt today, from pop to hip-hop.

RED, WHITE and BLUES

In Performance at The White House

RED, WHITE and BLUES

2012

Blues legend B.B. King performs with an all-star cast at a White House event titled "In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues."

As part of the In Perfomance series, music legends and contemporary artists were invited to perform at the White House for a celebration of blues music and in recognition of Black History Month.

The program featured appearances by B.B. King, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark, Jr., Shemekia Copeland, Buddy Guy, Warren Haynes, Mick Jagger, Keb' Mo', Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, with Taraji P. Henson as the program host and Booker T. Jones as music director and bandleader.

The event took place on February 21st, 2012.

MEMPHIS SOUL

In Performance at the White House

MEMPHIS  SOUL

President and Mrs. Obama host a celebration of the timeless classics of "Memphis Soul" in this PBS music special taped in the East Room of the White House. The all-star concert honors the memorable soul sounds from the mid- to late-1960s that came from Memphis, Tennessee, and legendary labels like Stax-Volt Records, which featured artists such as Al Green, Mavis Staples, Carla Thomas, Otis Redding and many more.

Every form of rock today, including heavy metal, need to recognize that the birth of their musical style all has it roots right here, in black music from the South. Every legendary rock group from England and elsewhere; The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Cream (Eric Clapton), The Rolling Stones, etc., all know this and have payed their homage to these great American pioneers who were being ignore in the U.S.,but Elvis of course being from Memphis was in tune with it as well, with his Gospel music. Steve Perry of Journey says that Otis Redding and Sam Cooke were his influences. It seems to me that kids in the U.S. who like Rock think of black music as only being rap, and that is incorrect.
